About Jan Hollis

Jan Hollis, Jim’s wife of 35 years, has recently retired from more than 30 years in education, and we are delighted that she has begun working in the ministry, with a special emphasis in AV/tech development. A vital part of Jim’s ministry during his years of service in the local church, as well as through the years of Proactive’s infancy and growth, she hopes to be able to contribute in this new way.

Of her spiritual journey, Jan says, “It was on a summer beach trip with a dear childhood friend that I came to what I called – and have since read that John Wesley referred to – my ‘becoming aware’ of Christ in my life. What an amazing thought that a heavenly Father pursues us until we accept the gift of Christ’s sacrifice!”

Jan’s Methodist heritage began in South Georgia, at Hinesville UMC. Her faith-walk was nurtured by devoted Christian parents, as well as through a supportive church and extended community of faith in her hometown. Music, Sunday School, UMYF, Bible studies, summer camp, the UMC Student Volunteer Intern Program - all provided avenues of learning and service. She later worked with her parents, Jack and Ellene Norwood, at Epworth by the Sea, on St. Simons - where Jan’s dad introduced her to Jim when he came to stay at Epworth over the summer. Little did she know the wonderful adventure she would be on since!

Jan graduated with a BS in Education from Georgia Southern, and later continued her education in other Georgia schools – UGA, KSU, WGC – finishing with an EDS in Educational Leadership and Supervision from West Georgia. In her life as an educator, she served as a teacher, Instructional Lead Teacher, Assistant Principal, and K-5 English-Language Arts Supervisor for Cobb County, as well as supervising student teachers for West Georgia.

Jan and Jim have two sons, James and Jonathan. Jonathan and Tiffany, his wife, have added to the Hollis family two grandsons, Wesley and Jack, and – finally – a little “grand-daughter”, Lucy. Is there any wonder why Jan might have chosen to retire?

Jan and Jim share many favorite scriptures, but the one that has been most central to their life and ministry together is I Corinthians 13. “I like Peterson’s version in The Message because he puts it plainly: ‘Trust steadily in God, hope unswervingly, love extravagantly. AND THE BEST OF THE THREE IS LOVE.’ v.13”
